Because of their extreme versatility, your ability to get the longest life out of them will make you smile and save some coins in your pocket. If you think about it, the benefits are endless. They are easy to apply and remove, clip-ins cause no damage to your natural hair when installed correctly, and they can also come in a variety of colors allowing you to change up your style at any time.
We’re addressing the ultimate list of dos and don’ts when it comes to clip-ins, in addition to answering your most frequently asked questions regarding human hair extensions.
How do you keep clip-in extensions in quality condition?
If you are investing in quality human hair extensions like ours at Sleek by Hailey, we suggest taking care of your extensions just as well as you would take care of your own hair.
Do: Use mild shampoos to ensure the hair is properly clarified of dirt and product buildup, followed by conditioners that give maximum moisture and will allow your clip-ins to remain healthy, shiny, and soft. Allow the hair to air dry if possible or use a blow dry with a heat protectant to keep the hair intact.
Do also use lightweight hair oils like argan oil to add shine and moisture.
Don’t: Go weeks or even worse months without properly cleansing your clip-ins. You will quickly find that trying to style dirty extensions is just as bad as trying to style dirty hair.
How do you keep clip-ins hair extensions soft?
But products are only one piece of the puzzle, the hair tools you use as well can play a huge part in the condition of your clip-in extensions to keep them soft.
Do: Use hair tools like a wet brush, detangle brush, or bamboo paddle brush, which are some of the best brushes for hair extensions. All of these brushes are great at preventing knots and gently protecting hair cuticles for a nice blend.
Don’t: Use brushes and combs not suitable for the texture of your hair extensions. For example, if you are wearing curly clip-ins we don’t recommend trying to style with a small comb. Also for curly clip-ins don’t use products filled with alcohol that will dry out the curls. Look for curl-enhancing products to bring out the texture
Can I shower with clip-ins extensions?
Although clip-ins are versatile, we do not recommend showering your hair with the clip-ins installed to avoid a big tangled mess.
Do: Shower as normal with a shower cap to prevent getting your hair and the extensions wet.
Don’t: Add shampoo to your hair with the clip-ins installed.
Well, how do I wash my clip-in hair extensions?
To wash your clip-ins, follow these steps:
- Brush the extensions to remove any tangles or knots.
- Fill a basin or sink with lukewarm water.
- Add a small amount of gentle shampoo to the water.
- Soak the extensions in the water for a few minutes.
- Gently massage the shampoo into the extensions, avoiding the clips.
- Rinse the extensions thoroughly with lukewarm water.
- Apply a small amount of conditioner to the extensions, avoiding the clips.
- Leave the conditioner in for a few minutes.
- Rinse the extensions thoroughly with lukewarm water.
- Gently blot the extensions with a towel to remove excess water.
- Hang the extensions to air dry, or use a low heat setting on a hair dryer.
Can I sleep in my clip-ins?
While it may be tempting to do, we do not recommend sleeping in your clip-in hair extensions. This may cause breakage since clip-ins are configured with small combs that attach to the hair. Keep it safe and quickly remove your clip-ins at the end of the day and easily re-install the next day.
What’s the best way to store my clip-ins?
To ensure that your clip-in hair extensions last as long as possible, it's important to store them properly.
Do: Keep them in a cool, dry place and avoid exposing them to direct sunlight. Also, store them in their original packaging or a protective hair storage bag to keep them safe and free from tangles.
Don’t: Leave them sitting around, all balled up mixed in with other hair products and accessories
How long should clip-in extensions last?
Clip-in hair extensions can last anywhere from 6 - 12 months with proper care. Sleek by Hailey specifically, offers luxury hair extensions that will last a significantly long time with the proper care and maintenance. Our extensions are cuticle aligned and come from a single source donor to ensure that the hair is super soft and silky from the roots all the way to the ends.
Do: Keep up routine maintenance for your clips ins after extended use. Shampooing, conditioning and properly storing as mentioned above.
Don’t: Use harsh chemicals and extreme heat. This may cause your clip-ins to deteriorate faster than expected. If you want to dye your clip-ins we recommend looking into our wide range of Black, Brown, and Blonde hair extensions and textures.
Overall, how long your clip-in extensions last will depend on where you purchase them and how well you take care of them as mentioned in all of our tips above. For more information check out our post, How Long to Hair Extensions Last.
